Employment Termination Benefits in the U.S. Economy

Public- and private-sector programs providing benefits to unemployed workers differ in size, coverage, eligibility requirements, benefit levels, benefit duration and financing methods. They can be classified as: 1) Job termination programs, e.g., unemployment insurance and severance pay; 2) Disability insurance program; and 3) Public means-tested assistance programs, e.g., Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income, and Aid to Families with Dependent Children.
